CLOSING COMMENTS FOR PIRATES 4 FROM JAKE AND DAN

DAN’S TAKE: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is an ambitious new take on the Pirates series, shaping a new tone and a new flair for a wearing formula. Despite occasional pacing problems and general lack of development, the cinematography, all star cast, clever action sequences, sweeping scenery and accompanying music make for an epic ride that immerses moviegoers into a world unlike anything else out there. Though Johnny Depp fans may not get all they bargained for, the movie works as a precedent for the no-doubt many sequels to follow, and reminds us all that old sea dogs can still learn new tricks.
JAKE'S TAKE: Stranger Tides isn't the movie Jack Sparrow deserves. That's what I kept thinking as I sat in my theater seat watching the awkward story telling unfold. Sure, it has good moments that truly remind us of why we love the POTC franchise to begin with, but they're few and far between. Jack also feels strangely empty during this movie; more of there to take up space than actually play a pivotal role in the plot. And here lies my biggest disappointment with Stranger Tides; it's the Jack Sparrow movie that doesn't really need Jack Sparrow. Oh, well. Here's hoping Xmen: First Class is better!
